ILMA to Host Public Lecture on Setswana Content Production at Motsweding FM

Written by Olanrewaju Ogundeyi

The Indigenous Language Media in Africa (ILMA) Research Focus Area in the Faculty of Humanities at North-West University (NWU) will host a public lecture on 18 March 2026 focusing on the state of Setswana content production in South Africa’s radio landscape.

The lecture, titled “Producing Setswana Content on Motsweding FM: Where are we?”, will be presented by Itumeleng Bahetane. It will examine the progress, challenges, and opportunities associated with producing Setswana content on SABC – Motsweding FM, one of the country’s key Setswana-language radio stations.

The discussion comes at a time when debates around indigenous language preservation, representation, and transformation in the media continue to gain momentum. The lecture aims to provide critical insight into how indigenous language media platforms contribute to cultural identity, community engagement, and knowledge production.

Hosted by ILMA, a research focus area dedicated to advancing scholarship and dialogue around indigenous language media in Africa, the event forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen academic and industry conversations on language and media development.

The lecture will take place from 15:00 to 17:00 at the A1 Building, Room 261, Multifunctional Boardroom at NWU. Academics, students, media practitioners, and members of the public with an interest in indigenous language media are encouraged to attend.
